PURPOSE:

Each person has the ability to grow and thrive. My focus is to provide counseling services in a nurturing and supportive environment to meet the unique needs of our students and their families. We strive together to develop a strong working partnership and a secure alliance that supports personal growth and achievement for the greatest potential of each student. The systemic approach we utilize emphasizes the interactions, interrelatedness, and connectedness of the different spheres of influence. Our treatment system includes the student, immediate family, school administration, teachers, and classmates.

Counselor:

Our school Counselor graduated with a MSSW degree with a specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy. Currently she is a Marriage and Family Therapist  Associate and a Certified Social Worker who is working towards Licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Elizabeth is scheduled on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays of each week. The school secretary can get a message to her on  the days she is not scheduled. Please feel free to call Elizabeth at 635-7141 with any concerns or recommendations you  might have.

Counseling Services:

Individual and Family Counseling:

Counseling services are available during the school year. The teachers and/or parents make a referral for services and the student works with counselor on the needed issues. Today’s counselors use a vast array of skills and resources to meet the needs of students, parents, and faculty. Interventions are designed for the multiple systems levels in which a child functions. All the members of a child’s community possess the ability to impact the behavior, attitudes, and emotional well-being of the child.

Counseling Groups:

Small counseling groups that address specific needs and topics are offered during the year. The group size typically ranges from six to ten students. Small counseling groups typically focus on developing social skills, building self-esteem, anger management, safe feeling expression, organizational skills and stress management. The types of groups we have offered at time are:

Between Girls: Discovering Who We Are

                   (6th, 7th & 8th grade girls)

Admiring Who We Are… journey to womanhood

                   (8th grade girls)

Mission Responsible: A Journey Into Manhood

                   (6th, 7th & 8th grade boys)

            Divorce Group for Children

            It’s an Emotional World:

            Study Skills/Organizational Skills Group

            Social Skills Group

Bully Busters Anti Bullying Club 4th graders

Classroom Programs:

The classroom program is developed and/or implemented by the counselor or counselor interns. The counselor will go into the classroom as needed to address the current needs of the students. Some examples may include bullying issues and conflict resolution. Throughout the year specific programs promoted by the Archdioceses is taught to the students such as:

PeaceBuilders®

PeaceBuilders is an elementary school anti-violence curriculum that provides clear messages and mechanisms that promote a caring and safe school environment. It is built on the following principles which are woven into the school’s daily pledge: (1) Praise People, (2) Give Ups Put Downs, (3) Notice Hurts, (4) Right Wrongs, and (5) Seek Wise People.

Bully Busters

We take a solution-focused approach not only attempting to determine the cause of the problems, but also making a commitment to intervene to solve those problems. Our approach attempts to prevent and intervene in bullying situations that helps to create a more positive and effective environment for learning, thus benefiting all students. Forms that we have developed that give our students a “Voice” are the Caring Cardinal Bullying Form and the Truce Agreement.

Good Touch/Bad Touch®

Good-Touch/Bad-Touch® is a child abuse prevention curriculum designed for pre-school and Kindergarten through sixth grade students as a tool to teach children the skills they need to prevent or interrupt abuse. It works by teaching children what abuse is, by giving them skills development, and by empowering them into action if threatened or victimized.

Presentations:

Typically once a year our counselor will present on certain topics to our parents through our PTSO Organization. Such topics have included, Helping our children express anger in healthy ways and Helping our Children Take Responsibility for their Actions.
