(KA) KINDERGARTEN NOTES

Happy Summer Soon

It is almost here.  That yucky, hot, sticky summer joy.  And with that comes not just the sun and fun but the need to keep working with your now first grader.  Working with them throughout the summer keeps their skills sharp and also allows them to remain somewhat in the learning mode.  It is important to set aside 20-30 minutes per week-day and work with your child reviewing skills learned.  Math, reading, writing, sequencing, counting, etc. all need to be refreshed and used.  Find creative ways to do this like playing family games.

In Religion we have been learning about Jesus life after the resurrection and what it means for us to be apostles today.  We all, as baptized Catholics have a responsibility to evangelize the world.  People will come to know Jesus and his love for us by the good deeds we do.

We are really trying to remember the life skills from our Discipline with a Purpose.  We continue to work on listening skills because it is such an important skill and right now we are having a really hard time using that skill.  But we also strive to follow directions, ask questions, share, understand social skills, cooperation and knowing reasons for rules.  When we catch other students following one of these skills we put their name on the chart for that skill.  It is fun to see the names on the chart especially when the students put others names on it.

Parents often ask for good websites for their child to use at home.  Here are some I like to use:  www.starfall.com      www.funschool.com    www.scholastic.com  (click on the kids section)   www.kidzone  and go to the kindergarten section.  More to add are www.unclefred.com/index.html  www.weeklyreader.com/index.html  and  www.funbrain.com.

In Math we have learned about subtraction.  This can be very hard for some children to learn.  Practice is the key.  Websites specifically to help with telling time....    www.harcourschool.com/activity/telling_time_gr1 www.oswego.org/ocsd_web/games/StopTheClock/sthec1.html  www.bbc.co.uk/wales/snapdragon/yesflash/time-1.htm  www.mhschool.com/math/2003/Student/activity/courses/gr1/ch19

In Reading we have already learned lots of new words.   If you would like a new list at home please let me know and I will send you one.   We should also be able to blend simple 3 letters words with short a and short i and short o and now short e .  We have read 58 little books now and we were really proud of ourselves.  When reading with us at home ask questions about the setting, the plot of the story, the characters, what happened, why it happened, etc.  This will help your child later to better comprehend what they are reading.
