Monday, January 30, 2012                Third Grade News

Welcome to Catholic Schools Week!  It looks like we are starting out with some beautiful sunny weather.  Be sure and check the Family Focus online for all of the happenings this week.

Our spelling words this week will have the vowel sound er.  This vowel sound can be spelled in several different ways.

er – certain     herself     perfect     verb     determine     nerve     commercial

or – world     word     worm     workout     worthwhile

ir – third     dirty     thirsty     whirlwind     virtual

ear – early     earth     earn

Vocabulary words with the meaning as used in our story.

average – the quantity found by dividing the sum of all the quantities by the number of quantities

depth – the distance from the top to the bottom

deserts –dry, sandy regions without water and trees

outrun – to run faster than someone or something else

peak – the pointed top of a mountain or hill

waterfalls – streams of water that fall from a high place

Our story this week is Hottest Coldest Highest Deepest by Steve Jenkins.  The story is Expository Nonfiction which gives information about the real world.  The students will be finding out how the environment where they live compares to different extreme locations.  They will be doing a lot of comparing and contrasting.

In religion we will be learning how the Catholic Church welcomes all people.  We will continue with arrays and multiplication in math.  And learn how drugs and alcohol affect our body.

On Tuesday, we will be celebrating the 100th day of school.  The children may bring in 100 pieces of cereal to eat as a snack that day.  Have a wonderful week!
