VOCABULARY

1. mineral - material that forms in the earth from nonliving matter.
2. fossil - the hardened parts or mark left by an organism that lived a long time ago.
3. fuel - a material that can be burned to produce useful heat.
4. natural resource - a material that comes from the earth and can be used by living things.
5. ore - rock that has a large amount of useful materials.

1. decay - to slowly break down or rot.
2. humus - decayed organisms in soil.
3. nutrient - a material that plants and animals need to live and grow.
4. clay soil - soil with tiny grains that are packed closely together.
5. loam - good planting soil that is a mixture of clay, silt, sand, and humus.
6. sandy soil - loose soil with large grains.

1. recycle - to change something so it can be used again.
2. landfill - a place where garbage is buried in soil.
3. conserve - to keep something from being used up.
